Sotheby’s New York set two world records for gemstones today, for a ruby and a pink diamond, fetching identical prices of $34.8 million each.

A 10.57 carat pink diamond, dubbed The Eternal Pink, also achieved $34.8 million at auction on Thursday, establishing a world auction record for a “fancy purplish-pink diamond”. Sotheby’s has described it as the “most vivid pink diamond to ever come to market”.

A 55.22-carat ruby has become both the largest and most valuable gem of its kind ever to sell at auction, netting $34.8 million on Thursday.

A ruby sold at Sotheby's in New York on Thursday for $34.8 million, setting a new record price at auction for the precious stone. That set a record per carat of $3.29 million for a stone of its color.
