A 5-year-old girl is dead and her grandfather is missing Monday after a wave reportedly swept them off a Northern California beach and into the ocean over the weekend, according to Coast Guard officials.

After 22 hours, the search for a missing man swept out by a wave in California has been suspended by the U.S. Coast Guard. The 54-year-old man was reportedly swept into the ocean by a wave on Saturday at Martins Beach in California,

The U.S. Coast Guard said at 3:32 p.m. Sunday the 5-year-old girl who was swept out to sea on Saturday was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Coast Guard suspended the search Sunday for a 54-year-old man who had been swept to sea the day south of Half Moon Bay the day before, and also reported that a 5-year-old girl previously rescued had died.
