The IRS is expanding eligibility for the government’s free tax filing software, Direct File, by doubling the number of participating states, it announced Thursday.

For next year’s tax season, the IRS's Direct File program will be available in 24 states and cover an expanded list of tax situations.

The agency has partnered with eight tax software companies to provide eligible taxpayers — those with an Adjusted Gross Income of $84,000 or less — free federal tax filing services online.
