BEIRUT/JERUSALEM, March 6 (Reuters) - Israel pounded Beirut's southern suburbs with airstrikes on Friday, ⁠stepping ⁠up a war with Hezbollah that has forced hundreds of thousands ⁠of Lebanese from their homes and killed more than 200, according to a health ministry toll.

Reports indicate that more than 1,200 people have been killed in Iran, over 70 in Lebanon and around a dozen in Israel so far. Tehran has warned that continued hostilities could lead to widespread destruction of the Middle East's military and economic infrastructure.

Israel and Hezbollah have repeatedly traded blows over the past few decades with tensions ramping up as recently as 2023.
