The situation escalated in Lebanon on Monday after Hezbollah targeted a military site in northern Israel with rockets and drones in response to ongoing Israeli air strikes and the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in a US-Israeli attack.
The Israel Defense Forces said it had also carried out strikes on Thursday targeting the Iran-backed Hezbollah group's stronghold in the south of the Lebanese capital, Beirut. Across the Gulf, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar both reported coming under missile and drone attack on Thursday.
Attacks by Hezbollah and an Iraqi militia are the latest signs of the expanding reach of the war in the Middle East.
Across Iran’s capital, explosions rang out overnight as the U.S. and Israel pounded Iran with airstrikes. Iran and its allies have hit back against Israel and neighboring Gulf states.
