A large storm battered the Northeast on Monday with heavy rain and strong winds, causing power outages from New York to Maine.

“A train of heavy rain with a few embedded thunderstorms, or at least claps of thunder get established from south to north as it gets later in the evening,” the National Weather Service warned on Sunday afternoon. “This is all due to a conveyor belt of moisture with anomalous high for this time of the year.”

Emergency management officials in New York City issued a travel advisory for Sunday and Monday. Powerful winds could knock out power, officials warned.

A flood watch is in effect across all five boroughs from 4 p.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday, as forecasters say a powerful weekend storm could bring 2-3 inches of rain to the area.

Some locations in central Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island could see 5 to 7 inches of rain. Gusting winds are in the forecast, and flooding is possible along waterways.
