California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed a ban on “addictive” social media features for anyone under 16 on Thursday, advancing some of the country’s most significant new restrictions on tech platforms.
The package includes bills that will ban social media platforms from letting children under 16 access addictive feeds and establish a safety framework for children using AI chatbots.
They're aimed at protecting minors, but the rules are not universally supported.
Governor Gavin Newsom signed 13 new laws to bolster online safety for children, including measures against harmful AI chatbots and social media practices.
