Pope Francis, 88, died weeks after he was discharged from the hospital following a lengthy battle with double pneumonia and other health issues.

The leader of the world’s 1 billion Roman Catholics addressed past scandals and embraced migrants, the poor and gay and lesbian faithful. Some wished he’d gone further.

Francis did away with that sort of viewing. Instead, a procession brought his coffin on Wednesday directly to St. Peter’s Basilica, where a public viewing is taking place. Francis’ body, dressed in papal vestments, his head covered with a white bishop’s miter, is lying in state to allow tens of thousands of mourners to bid farewell.

Pope Francis died Easter Monday. His body is expected to be moved to a coffin the same day and put on public display at St. Peter's Basilica this week.
