The pressure now moves to the House, which is in recess, as the government enters at least a limited funding lapse.
The Senate is on track to pass a government funding package Friday afternoon after Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) told colleagues that he will release his hold on the massive spending bill if he gets a vote on legislation to crack down on sanctuary cities.
The Senate voted overwhelmingly Friday to pass a major funding package consisting of five regular appropriations bills and a two-week stopgap measure for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) but the legislation won’t become law before parts of the government shut down at midnight.
Sen. Lee said he thought the package was full of "wasteful earmarks," while Sen. Curtis voted in favor.
The measure, Senate Bill 241, passed the chamber on a 25-15 vote after several hours of debate — and a fire alarm that prompted a brief evacuation of the Roundhouse — and now advances to the House with less than one week left in this year's 30-day legislative session.
