Trade deficit in goods widens sharply to highest level in more than two years
The numbers: The U.S. trade deficit in goods widened 6.3% to $102.7 billion in July, according to the Commerce Department’s advanced estimate released Thursday. That’s the largest deficit since May 2022. Economists polled by Econoday were looking for the deficit to widen to a $98 billion deficit from last month’s $96.6 billion gap.
