3 Giant Solar Outbursts Explode Towards Earth, Prompting Aurora Forecast Across USA series of three powerful flares and associated explosions of solar material out across the Solar System have set Earth squarely in the path of a "severe"-level geomagnetic storm.
The spectacle delighted skywatchers and photographers, who captured the rare event from coast to coast. It was fueled by multiple coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, that burst from a highly active sunspot region on the sun.
These CMEs are currently headed toward Earth and will likely cause strong to minor geomagnetic storms later today and Wednesday, NOAA said in a forecast report. In the United States, northern states and lower midwest regions may see auroras in the sky, it added.
Northern Lights may dazzle again tonight as a severe geomagnetic storm reaches peak intensity across regions. Follow live.
Parts of Florida were treated to the aurora borealis this week. The show appears to be over, though — for now.
A rare and powerful “cannibal” solar storm is expected to hit Earth today, potentially lighting up the British night sky with the Northern Lights while causing power
