A powerful winter storm system swept through the region Monday, bringing a dramatic change in weather conditions. As the system moved out on its back side, severe thunderstorms quickly gave way to a mix of sleet and rain north of Columbus.
For the most recent wave of storms that started Thursday, wind gusts of 44 mph were recorded at the Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport before 6 a.m. Friday. The snow, with large flakes, was wet and heavy and began falling in the lakes area after 4 p.m. Thursday and continued into the early morning hours of Friday.
The latest forecast shows Milwaukee will likely miss the worst of a winter storm expected this weekend across much of Wisconsin, though the area will still see a mix of snow, rain and wind.
