More severe storms were expected to roll across the central U.S. this week following the weather-related deaths of more than two dozen people and a devastating Kentucky tornado.

Disastrous systems sweeping across the Midwest have left at least 26 dead, including nine people killed after a tornado sparked what authorities called a mass casualty event in southeastern Kentucky.

At least 28 people died during the severe storms in Missouri, Kentucky, and Virginia, according to The Associated Press.
